Dangerous find – real hand grenade rolled from scrap heap

Date:

At the cleaning association “Green Bin” near Neunkirchen, a conscientious excavator driver discovered a hand grenade in the waste heap. He responded exemplary. The police and mine clearance service were immediately alerted and the dangerous ammunition was safely removed.

Accidental discovery in the “Green Bin”. Fortunately, what could have ended explosively turned out to be mild thanks to the responsible actions of an employee. The trained eye of an excavator operator did not miss that a hand grenade suddenly rolled out of a pile of scrap metal.

“It would be unthinkable if he had driven over the grenade with his wheel loader,” says Gerd Hettlinger, director of the “Groene Bak”. He immediately informed the nearest police station in Scharzau am Steinfeld, which quickly arrived on the scene. “The police have already recognized from a photo that it is a practice grenade and therefore poses no immediate danger,” said Hettlinger. Shortly afterwards the grenade was picked up and destroyed by the mine clearance service. Unfortunately, it is no longer possible to find out who ultimately threw away this explosive find.

Major underestimated danger: lithium-ion batteries
Dangerous situations and discoveries occur again and again in the green box. A hand grenade has already been discovered. And even then we were lucky that nothing happened.

Another major problem, because it is particularly dangerous, increasingly turns out to be old lithium-ion batteries from e-scooters or e-bikes, which are thrown away with normal household waste by irresponsible citizens. “They can easily catch fire and are very difficult to extinguish,” says Hettlinger. They therefore also pose a great danger to waste management workers.

His urgent appeal: “Always take batteries to the collection point.”
