Winter has taken hold of parts of England. Manchester Airport temporarily suspended operations on Thursday. The runways were closed due to “significant amounts of snow”, according to a statement from the metropolis’ airport.
It was the fourth closure in five days due to heavy snowfall. Numerous flights had to be postponed, diverted or canceled as crews were busy clearing snow, causing significant disruption to passengers. Manchester Airport reopened on Friday.
Several railway lines are closed
Warnings have been going on for days about ice, snow and fog on the island. According to a BBC report, around 80 schools have closed in Wales due to traffic problems caused by snow and ice. Several train routes were also closed in the British part of the country, the PA news agency reported.
Cold wave with a maximum of minus twelve degrees
Britain experienced the coldest night of this winter on Thursday. The temperature dropped to minus 12.4 degrees Celsius. The British Met Office has issued snow and ice warnings for large parts of Scotland, as well as northern and eastern England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Flood warnings were also in force in many places in England and Wales. In some places rivers have already burst their banks. As a result, a railway line in the county of Cornwall had to be closed.
