Operation against Ukraine – Interrogation details: North Koreans left alone

Date:

South Korean intelligence has confirmed the capture of two North Korean soldiers by Ukraine. Seoul also published the first details of the detainees’ interrogation. Apparently the men were not told for a long time why they were traveling to Russia.

The NIS intelligence service said on Sunday it confirmed that the Ukrainian army captured the two North Koreans on Thursday in Russia’s Kursk region. One of the soldiers revealed during questioning by investigators that he arrived in November and received military training from Russian forces.

The captured soldier also admitted that North Korean soldiers “suffered significant losses” in Russia. NOS further explained that the soldier said he initially thought he was only being sent to Russia for an exercise.

It was only when he arrived in Russia that he realized he had been sent into battle. The Ukrainian domestic secret service SBU reported this earlier.

Men on their own
NOS further stated that one of the men captured by Ukraine “had not received food or water for four to five days.” South Korean intelligence continues to work with the Ukrainian SBU to exchange information on North Korean soldiers deployed in the war in Ukraine.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that SBU investigators are currently interrogating two wounded North Korean soldiers captured in the Kursk region. Since neither spoke Russian or Ukrainian, they were interrogated “in cooperation” with South Korean secret services using Korean interpreters.

Thousands of North Koreans in action
Zelensky published photos of two injured men with Asian facial features on online media, but there was no evidence they were North Koreans (see images above). The information from South Korea now supports the information from Zelenskyj.

North Korea has sent thousands of soldiers to support the Russian army. According to the US and South Korea, about 10,000 soldiers from North Korea have been deployed in Russia, including in the Kursk region on the border with Ukraine. In late December, Ukrainian President Zelenskiy first reported that several North Korean soldiers injured in the battle had been killed after being captured.
