Just before the end of the month, the temperature record set ten days ago in Vorarlberg – 36.5 degrees – was surpassed again in June for this year. In Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in Lower Austria, no less than 36.7 degrees was measured on Wednesday.
Ten days ago, on Sunday, June 19, temperatures approached respective June state records for the first time. The absolute record value, measured in June in recent years, is currently in Lower Austria. In 2013, no less than 38.6 degrees was registered in Waidhofen/Ybbs.
None of these records related to the climate crisis is cause for celebration. The storms caused by the extreme temperatures repeatedly caused severe damage across Austria in June.
Floods and mudslides
Wednesday night the area around Villach was a center of extreme weather. A man was also killed in a mudslide in meetings. In addition to Carinthia, the Salzburger Lungau was also badly hit. In Tamsweg a civil alarm went off on Wednesday morning due to flooding, but the situation there eased again during the day.
