The fire brigade was on duty on Sunday morning in the Lower Austrian parish church of Arbesbach (Zwettl district). Smoke was noticed when the church was unlocked. The confessional was destroyed by the fire and no one was injured.
It was the first deployment in 2025 for the Arbesbach volunteer fire brigade. The helpers were alerted around 7 a.m. When they arrived on scene, the interior of the parish church was completely filled with smoke, but “an open fire was no longer visible,” the fire department report said.
Four fire brigades with approximately 50 men extinguished the embers and cleared the building of smoke. The bell tower and the attic above the church vault were also checked.
High damage
The confessional burned out and according to the fire brigade the damage was probably significant. No one was injured. According to the police, the cause was a technical defect in a heat radiator.
