A large British study supports the idea that milk and certain dairy products can reduce the risk of bowel cancer. According to this study, just one glass of milk (200 grams) per day reduces the risk of disease by an average of about 14 percent.
50 grams of yogurt per day would reduce the risk of colon cancer by eight percent – probably mainly because of the calcium it contains, the researchers report in the journal ‘Nature Communications’.
Whole grain products, fruit and individual vitamins probably also have a protective effect. On the other hand, both alcohol and red and processed meat can increase the risk of colon cancer, reports the team led by Keren Papier from the University of Oxford.
Calcium protects the intestinal mucosa
“The likely protective role of calcium may be related to its ability to bind to bile acids and free fatty acids in the colonic lumen, thereby reducing their potential carcinogenic effects,” the researchers explain. Previous research results show that calcium protects the intestinal mucosa.
However, just 20 grams of alcohol per day increases the risk of colon cancer by about 15 percent on average. For red and processed meat – such as sausage – this can be about eight percent more at 30 grams per day.
Colon cancer is the third most common tumor disease
In Austria, colon cancer is the third most common tumor disease. Nearly 5,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer each year, and about 2,600 die from it each year. The risk of colon cancer is considerably lower for women than for men and has fallen slightly more sharply for men than for women in recent years.
