The 50-year-old resident was on his way home from a visit to the Vöcklamarkt around 11:20 pm. He used a shortcut via the Westbahn tracks. He then sat down on the rails in the station area for unknown reasons.
Hit by freight train
But precisely at that moment a freight train arrived at 90 km/h towards Salzburg. The man was caught and fatally injured. His wife went into severe shock and was cared for by the Red Cross Crisis Intervention Team. The western route was closed for about an hour.
