Donald Trump is often depicted by cartoonists or activists as a screaming yellow baby, duck or executioner of the Statue of Liberty. Now a Chinese artist has discovered a completely different side of the future American president.
Hong Jinshi immortalized the 78-year-old Republican as a Buddha figure and achieved considerable success. The white ceramic statues, on which Trump sits cross-legged, wearing a long robe and half-closed eyes, are enjoying great popularity again shortly before the start of his second term.
Since the election victory, there has been a lot of interest in images
Hong first offered his Trump Buddha to Chinese online mail order company Taobao in 2021. Since then, the 47-year-old has sold hundreds of copies – depending on size, for between 999 and 20,000 yuan (132 to 2,600 euros). Since the American presidential elections in November, Trump’s Buddhas have become very popular again: “There was a lot of interest in the days after his election victory,” reports Hong, who originally designed the statues as a joke.
“It’s fun to make fun of respected and famous people,” Hong says of his motives. Trump works so well as Buddha in a meditation position because there are ‘two opposite extremes’. Trump is also not as ‘boring’ as other politicians, says Hong. “If he is president, there will be interesting news every day.”
