A young duo (16 and 17) on e-scooters rammed a director at high speed in a pedestrian area in Favoriten in October. The woman suffered serious injuries. The victim cannot forget the driver’s grin shortly before the collision. And she can’t get the statements of the two Syrians out of her head after the crash.
Experienced juvenile judge Daniela Forcedleitner does not get upset easily. But her nerves will also be put under strain on Monday during the trial for negligent bodily harm in Vienna’s Landl. First the 17-year-old suspect arrives 20 minutes late for his trial, then he can no longer remember his home address. The defendant also cannot answer whether he receives 1,000 euros in monthly assistance, as he entered on a form, or 400, as he claims in court. The statements he makes about the crime are surprising: “I have not been in Austria very long. I didn’t know it was forbidden.”
Director seriously injured
“The two of you were riding around the pedestrian area on a scooter. “Don’t think you can get away with this because of your lack of knowledge,” Forcedleidner is getting louder now. On October 7, 2024, a young man and a ‘passenger’ drove an electric scooter into the crowd at Keplerplatz in Vienna-Favoriten and rammed a woman head-on. The victim, a director, was thrown to the ground and suffered a broken sternum, a bruised skull and a broken tibia. The 53-year-old had to undergo surgery due to a brain haemorrhage.
In court she testified as a witness: “There was a lot going on. I was on my way to the subway. Suddenly the scooter was in front of me, and I remember: the driver laughed at me before he hit me. If it had been unintentional, he would have looked scared.”
Witnesses from the crowd observed the event and reported that the e-scooter drove towards the crowd at very high speed without giving way. Both drivers fell in the collision with the woman and found the incident very funny: “They were laughing all the time.” As the woman lay seriously injured on the ground, one of the two said to her scornfully, “She must learn to respect me.”
Five-month suspended prison sentence
The defendant and his particularly disrespectful 16-year-old passenger, owner of the e-scooter, deny all this. They claim to have treated the woman at the scene and apologized. “Are you telling me the crowd is lying?” said Mrs. Rat. “I prefer to believe that you are lying,” she sentenced the young person to a five-month suspended prison sentence and 3,000 euros in compensation for negligent bodily harm.
In the other claims – the woman demanded 20,000 euros – the victim is referred to civil law. “Believe me, you will have to pay for this incident for a very long time,” the judge said, adding: “You must learn to respect, not the victim. The woman could have died.” After his appearance in the Landl, the passenger is charged with giving false evidence.
