War of nerves in Africa – Viennese woman (73) kidnapped: “Her heart belongs to Agadez”

Date:

There is still no trace of the Austrian Eva G., who was kidnapped in West Africa: “Unfortunately, we can only wait and drink tea,” said the desperate family in the interview with “Krone”. A crisis team was set up at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vienna.

The kidnapping of the 73-year-old Viennese woman is not only causing a stir in Austria. Local and international media have been reporting on the spectacular case that has been bothering the authorities in Niger since Saturday evening. Eva G. was – also reported by the ‘Krone’ – packed into an SUV at gunpoint by five perpetrators around 7:20 PM and taken to an as yet unknown location.

The path to her house leads through a small boutique where there was initially a scuffle with an employee. A shot was also reportedly fired.

G. has spent almost half her life in various countries in the Sahara, “but her heart belongs to Agadez,” her family from Vienna said in an interview. In the city of 120,000 inhabitants in central Niger, the woman is as well-known as she is popular. And she is considered to have good ties, including with the authorities.

On Monday, the region’s governor convened an extraordinary meeting of the Security Council to G. All security and defense forces have been mobilized.

The background was initially unclear: whether the perpetrators were a criminal gang looking for ransom or an Islamist terrorist organization seeking to bring about political change is now the subject of the investigation. “No one knows who it was yet,” said a family member, “we can really just wait and see.”
