It started with an alarm about a garbage bin fire. When the volunteer fire brigade from Schöder (Murau district) arrived on the scene, it quickly became clear: there was more fire.
An entire carport complex was completely engulfed in flames late Monday evening, with 16 vehicles going up in flames. The Feistritz and St. Peter am Kammersberg fire brigades were immediately warned by their Schöder colleagues. A total of 49 firefighters were on site.
Residents fled in fear
Fortunately, no one was injured; the residents of the neighboring houses were able to escape to safety. A nine-lot residential building and a single-family home were affected. Despite the extreme heat and meter-high flames, the buildings were spared.
Fire watch until the early hours
In addition to the heat of the fire, the emergency services also suffered from the bitter cold in the area: at minus ten degrees, all water-bearing fixtures froze, the fire brigade reported on Tuesday. After the successful extinguishing work, the large-scale operation lasted until the early morning hours before the fire station could be closed.
