As the European border protection agency Frontex announced on Tuesday, the number of entries into the EU without valid documents fell by 38 percent in 2024. This is the lowest level since the corona pandemic year 2021.
In total, Frontex registered more than 239,000 irregular entries into the EU last year. The decline in numbers is mainly due to a decline in arrivals via the Central Mediterranean and Western Balkan routes.
“Despite persistent migratory pressure, increased cooperation between the EU and its partners in combating smuggling networks has led to a significant reduction in the number of border crossings at Europe’s external borders,” Frontex said.
Routes have shifted
However, according to further information, the number of people entering the EU through the EU’s borders with Belarus and Russia increased by 192 percent to 17,000. There were also 14 percent more cases of irregular border crossings on the Eastern Mediterranean route, at 69,400. The reason for this was new corridors from eastern Libya, with migrants mainly coming from Syria, Afghanistan and Egypt.
The number of migrants reaching the Canary Islands via the West African route also increased by 18 percent, according to the information. The number of arrivals last year was almost 47,000.
