In a heated debate over the US Supreme Court’s recent decision to make abortions significantly more difficult, US Attorney Robin Lumsden says the change may not end there. One of the judges promised: “Now the abortions have started and after that we will ensure ‘gay rights'”, meaning same-sex partnerships. Absurd: Contraception between spouses will also be restricted in the future…
In addition to the Supreme Court ruling, which makes abortions in the US significantly more difficult, there are also “additional clauses” that are “highly critical” according to renowned lawyer Lumsden. The judges had “made the slide” in the states to address and limit other issues as well, such as LGBTQI rights.
Abortion opponent sees ‘new, big movement’ emerging
The anti-abortion adversary Ludwig Brühl makes people sit up and take note of his opinion. For him, the Supreme Court decision was “a great success” for “democracy, justice and for women and children”, because in his view the US had an “extremist abortion regime”. He now sees a “big new movement” emerging and is happy that women’s rights are now protected. “Even the unborn child has the right to life,” says the organizer of the ultra-conservative “March for Life” movement.
“Why do men want to control my body?”
For journalist Annie Müller Martínez, this approach is “absurd”. It is unthinkable for them that someone – in this case the Supreme Court – determines the woman’s body and removes all options in such a stressful case as an unwanted pregnancy. Who should bear the children should also be allowed to decide. “The ruling of the American courts has nothing to do with justice,” said Müller Martínez. This drives women into illegality, which puts them in great danger.
‘Broad consensus in Austria that abortion rule is untouchable’
Attorney Lumsden argues that three quarters of Americans want to comply with the abortion rule. Could an ultra-conservative trend also spill over into Austria? “I don’t see that as a problem,” Lumsden says. In Austria there is “broad consensus that the current rule on abortion is untouchable,” explains the lawyer.
