Yoon’s arrest took place this morning after several failed attempts. The president, who was suspended after declaring martial law in December, has decided to appear despite the “illegal investigation” to avoid possible “bloodshed.”
South Korean authorities have managed to accomplish this Wednesday the arrest of deposed South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol after he attempted several times to gain entry to his residence and after the president agreed to appear before the anti-corruption bureau investigating him.
Yoon’s arrest warrant has been executed 10:33 local time (2:33 a.m. in Euskal Herria), they indicated from the Office for Corruption of Senior Officials (CIO), according to the South Korean news agency Yonhap.
The CIO is one of the entities, along with police and other government agencies, investigating the President for his volatile declaration of martial law last December and who had traveled to the scene at dawn today for a second arrest attempt, following the yet another failed attack early this month.
Large police presence and protests
The police have been deployed 3000 troops for today’s device and cordoned off the area around Yoon’s residence and warned those who tried to block the arrest that they would be arrested for obstruction of the law.
About 6,500 Yoon supporters have gathered around the property, while about 30 lawmakers from Yoon’s party, the People’s Power Party (PPP), have moved to the outskirts of the presidential residence to protest the order.
Finally, and after agreeing to testify, Yoon was taken to CIO headquarters. At the same time, a message previously recorded by the president was broadcast in which he stated that he had decided to appear before the authorities despite his warning. “illegal research” to avoid possible ‘bloodshed’.
The leader will be questioned at the CIO facilities, in a room with video and in the presence of his legal representatives, organization sources said. His defense will hold a press conference in the coming hours where more details will be known.
It’s the first time that a South Korean president is arrested while in office, although Yoon was removed from office in a motion approved by parliament on December 14.
