The Spanish government does not give permission for the Itsaraz wind farm planned in Aramaio and Eskoriatza

Date:

The Ministry of Ecological Transition has issued an adverse environmental impact assessment for the construction of the Itsaraz wind farm, promoted by the Norwegian government company Statkraft.

The Spanish Ministry of Ecological Transition has issued an adverse environmental impact assessment for the construction of the Itsaraz wind farmas determined in the municipal terms and conditions of Aramaio (Álava) and Eskoriatza (Gipuzkoa). The infrastructure would also affect Legutio, Arratzua-Ubarrundia and Aramaio in Álava; Arrasate/Mondragón, in Gipuzkoa, and Atxondo, Elorrio and Abadiño, in Bizkaia.

The advice, issued by the General Directorate of Environmental Assessment, was published in the Government Gazette on Thursday.

The report justifies the unfavorable criteria for the wind farm because of its consequences for fauna and nature reserves.

According to the document, “at the site selected for the project and with the proposed measures it cannot be excluded that it will have significant negative impacts on the protected bird life”, such as Egyptian vultures or griffon vultures.

The same negative impact is expected in the protected areas between which the project is located, “with possible damage to the integrity of the special protection area of the Natura 2000 network of Urkiola“.

Statkraft proposed a wind farm with an installed capacity of 60.4 megawatts (MW), consisting of eight wind turbines with a rotor diameter of 172 meters and a height of 201 meters.

In addition, it would have an electric evacuation line that would also affect Abadiño (Bizkaia), where an electric substation would be located, 13 kilometers away.
