Canadian researchers speak of a milestone! For the first time, the impact of a meteorite was recorded on video – including sound.
The impact occurred in July of the previous year on Canada’s Prince Edward Island. The natural event was captured by the surveillance camera of a residential building. According to media reports, the owners were in the entrance of the house. When Joe Velaidum and his partner Laura Kelly returned from walking their dogs, they noticed gray dust and debris on the sidewalk.
The two immediately checked their security camera footage and couldn’t believe their eyes. After playing it in super slow motion several times, the couple saw a small piece fall to the ground. “It sounded like a loud shot from a gun,” Veladium recalled to the Canadian Press.
Homeowner ponders near-death experience
“The shocking thing is that a few minutes earlier I was standing in the same spot,” Veladium told CBC News. “If I had seen it, I might not be here today,” he reflected on his near-death experience.
They collected the remains of the meteorite and sent them to the relevant reporting center at the University of Alberta. An enthusiastic researcher traveled with his entire family and examined the fragments, which weighed about 95 grams. Research showed that it was a chondrite. The usual type of meteorite pulls
is characterized by a fine-grained structure.
Crashed to the ground at a speed of 200 km/h
According to the University of Alberta, the ‘Charlottetown Meteoroit’ – named after the impact site – is believed to have fallen to Earth from an asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The impact speed was reportedly approximately 200 km/h.
Not only researcher Chris Herd, but also many of his colleagues are cheering, because it was not only the first meteorite crash on Prince Edward Island, but also the first to be recorded with sound.
