Some 30,000 employeesbetween teaching, cleaning and kitchen staff and haurreskolakhave been called to participate in the strike cycle of LAB, Steilas, ELA and CC. OO. in Basque public education, there is a demand for job improvements from next week.

Representatives of the above-mentioned unions registered this Friday with the education delegation of Bizkaia the dynamics of the proposed strike in the belief that it will have a “very important” sequel because “people are very angry”, they indicated during a meeting held in front of the headquarters of the Basque government in Bilbao.

In concrete terms, LAB, Steilas, ELA and CCOO have called on teaching staff to strike on January 22 and 23 and on February 26 and 27.

For their part, the staff of the Haurreskolak Consortium are called to strike on January 28 and 29 and February 12 and 13, while in the kitchens and cleaning the strikes will take place on January 30 and 31 and February 19 and 20.

In addition, the unions have called for demonstrations on Friday, starting today, in education centers.

The centers demand that a decision be taken in Euskadi on working conditions and demand that the Ministry of Education of the Basque government improve the working conditions of the workers.

The conveners call for more investment in public education to strengthen it and for measures to ease workload, rejuvenate the workforce, restore lost purchasing power and stabilize public employment, and to improve occupational health, Basque language and equality.

They also call for employment to be guaranteed in the face of mergers and closures of public centers “decided unilaterally to take advantage of fluctuations in the birth rate”, as they denounce.

According to the unions, ‘real’ negotiations to realize their demands will go hand in hand with the mobilizations. “If we don’t strike, they won’t pay attention to us,” they complained.

LAB, Steilas, ELA and CC. OO. They explained that the employment contracts of the aforementioned groups expired fifteen years ago and regret that, despite the fact that there is a new team at the head of Education, the department “continues to convene negotiating tables without sufficient content and thereby demands the union” .

Before the strike cycle begins, the above-mentioned centers hold meetings at the various work centers.

In it, “we see that people like to go out into the streets and are very angry and overwhelmed because they cannot do their work as they would like,” said ELA representative Miren Zubizarreta.

“The anger is latent and we believe the strikes will have an important follow-up,” he added.

According to CCOO representative Sonia Aldave, the Basque government “has a problem. The coordinated education has gone on strike and has made great progress, and in the field of public education, if we don’t go on strike, they won’t pay attention to us” , she said. .

In his opinion, “it is sad that the Ministry of Education does not advocate for public education” as “without this improvement that workers need in their circumstances” it cannot improve our public education system.
