Greenland Prime Minister: – “We don’t want to be Danes, we don’t want to be Americans”

Date:

Greenland Prime Minister Múte B. Egede reiterated Greenland’s rejection of the wishes of newly elected President Donald Trump in an interview with the American broadcaster Fox News. “We don’t want to be Danes. We don’t want to be Americans either. We want to be Greenlandic,” Egede explained.

But there are many areas where cooperation is possible, especially in defense and security. They are also prepared for the US to invest in mineral mining in Greenland, Egede says, given the island’s large amounts of untapped resources.

At the end of the interview, Egede made it clear again: “I think it is important to make it clear: Greenland wants cooperation, Greenland wants a strong partnership. But Greenland doesn’t want to be part of the US.”

Will Trump exert force on Greenland?
Greenland is largely autonomous, but is officially part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The largest island in the world with its important geopolitical location in the Arctic has aroused Trump’s desires, which he has repeatedly emphasized lately, sometimes with drastic words. He did not rule out military and economic coercion to gain control of the island.

In Denmark they are trying to smooth things out diplomatically with their NATO partner, the US. In a telephone conversation with Trump this week, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen referred to statements by Egede that the island was not for sale and also to the fact that Greenland would make its own decision about its independence.
