After a slightly too long smoke break, a fare evader clung to the outside of an ICE train in Bavaria at a speed of 282 km/h. As the federal police announced, the 40-year-old Hungarian had boarded the train in Munich towards Lübeck without a valid ticket and wanted to take a smoke break at the Ingolstadt train station.
When the doors closed, the man jumped onto a bracket between two carriages and held on to wiring harnesses. The jump was noticed by other passengers – they alerted the police.
The Hungarian eventually drove on the outside of the train at a top speed of 282 kilometers per hour along the highway towards Nuremberg – until the federal police had the ICE make an unscheduled stop in Kinding, Upper Bavaria.
Emergency braking could not be carried out: As “Bild” writes, the stowaway would probably have been torn from the train. The reason the man gave for his adventurous journey was that he did not want his luggage to travel alone on the train.
The man was ‘surprisingly’ unharmed
The man was “amazingly” unharmed in the life-threatening action, a federal police spokesperson said. The 40-year-old is now being investigated for obtaining benefits through fraud. He is also expected to be prosecuted for “an act disruptive to operations” – but this is only considered an administrative offence.
