A new trend is currently spreading from Japan to the US: luxury fruit. The luxury fruit also includes Del Monte’s Rubyglow pineapple, which sells for a whopping $400 (the equivalent of just under 390 euros).
With their ruby red outer skin, the Rubyglow pineapples visually stand out from the crowd of pineapples. With their striking red exterior and sweet yellow interior, the fruits are truly unique, the Del Monte company says enthusiastically on their website.
Only a few thousand units of the exclusive pineapple, which is said to have a lower acid content, are produced annually, according to the California-based company that produces fruit, vegetables and pet food.
Manufacturer Oishii charges sixteen dollars for a box of eight strawberries (photo above). The specially grown fruits are said to be sweeter and creamier than normal strawberries. This is relatively cheaper than pineapple, but a single strawberry still costs two euros…
The fruit suppliers justify the high prices with customers’ desire for exclusivity. So far, however, the luxury fruit has been received rather poorly on the street.
