Date now set – Israel will elect a new parliament on November 1.

Date:

A new parliament will be elected in Israel on November 1. MPs agreed on the date, a Knesset spokesman said. The new elections will take place after the eight-party ruling coalition falls apart. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has announced his retirement from politics and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid will take his place.

It is Israel’s fifth election in less than four years. In fact, Parliament should already decide on his dissolution on Wednesday. According to media reports, the decision has been delayed due to several legislative changes. According to the coalition agreement, Lapid will lead the interim government until the elections.

Irreconcilable Differences
Lapid and Bennett voted in favor of new elections after barely a year in office, after the differences in their multi-party coalition of a broad political spectrum from right to left could no longer be bridged and the slim majority in parliament was lost.

The ruling alliance was forged in June 2021 by far-right parties, as well as parties from the centre, left and an Arab faction. In particular, the coalition shared a desire to replace massively corrupt Benjamin Netanyahu from the nationally conservative Likud bloc as prime minister after 12 years.
