Two ICE trains searched – bomb threat stopped train traffic to Germany

Date:

Due to a bomb threat, two German express trains were stopped and searched on Saturday evening: one in Passau, the other in Schärding. The train station there was also evacuated and train services stopped. After about three hours, the police gave permission and the passengers could continue their journey.

Bomb threat – many will immediately think of the Swiss who informed the whole of Austria last year with his bomb threat emails. This time, however, it was a phone call alerting Deutsche Bahn on Saturday to a male passenger with explosive luggage.

Unplanned stop in Schärding
Two trains, an Intercity Express from Vienna to Passau, and another ICE from Nuremberg to Passau, were both considered endangered. The second was stopped and searched at Passau train station, the other was unexpectedly stopped at Schärding train station, shortly before the German border.

117 passengers and station evacuated
The train and its 117 passengers, as well as the border town’s train station, were evacuated and all train traffic was halted. Due to the cold, everyone who was affected was temporarily taken to safety at a neighboring car dealer.

After three hours everything is safe
Two bomb squad dogs and about twenty police officers searched the train for about three hours before it became clear that it was an empty threat and that no bomb threatened the train at Schärding station. A little later, officials in Passau came to the same conclusion. Train traffic resumed after just over three hours.
