As the Ministry of Digitalization in Taipei announced on Wednesday, the submarine cables to Taiwan’s Matsu Islands have been damaged again. One of the two cables connecting the archipelago to Taiwan was completely severed and the second cable was seriously damaged.
The islands are very close to the Chinese coast. China’s Taiwan Affairs Office did not immediately respond to a Reuters query.
Taiwan suspects China
Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory, has repeatedly complained about China’s “gray zone activities” aimed at putting pressure on the island without risking direct confrontation.
The two undersea cables to the Matsu Islands have already been cut once this year, causing an internet outage. Authorities at the time blamed two Chinese ships for the disruption, but acknowledged there was no evidence the Beijing government had deliberately damaged the cables.
