South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol will be charged on suspicion of sedition and abuse of power, the CIO’s corruption investigation agency said.
The CIO recommended this to the Public Prosecution Service, the official Yonhap news agency reports. The agency itself has no authority to file charges. Yoon declared martial law on December 3 in a budget dispute, plunging his country into a deep national crisis.
The impeachment proceedings are underway
The 64-year-old justified his actions as a legitimate measure to protect the nation from so-called “subversive forces” in the opposition.
Yoon has been in custody since last week. In addition, impeachment proceedings against the suspended president are underway at the Constitutional Court.
