Highest warning level: megastorm rages in Ireland and Britain

Date:

Storm Eowyn is hitting Ireland and parts of Britain at record speeds of up to 183 kilometers per hour. Nationally, the highest red alert level applies to the Republic of Ireland. More than 200 flights were canceled at Dublin Airport and train traffic was also at a standstill in large parts of the country. Several hundred thousand buildings have no power supply.

In concrete terms, more than 800,000 buildings in Ireland are without power, Irish media reported. The internet also failed in parts of the country. In the port city of Foynes, wind gusts were measured at a speed of 183 kilometers per hour – the value has never been this high since data collection began. Waves of more than ten meters high were recorded in Galway Bay on Friday morning, the severe weather center said.

The highest warning level has been issued for Ireland. The weather service Met Éireann warned that the storm would become even more intense. Heavy rainfall may cause localized flooding. There were reports of fallen trees and traffic delays in many parts of the country. Schools and other educational institutions remained closed.

Great Britain, Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland were particularly affected by the storm. Here too, the highest warning level for Friday was red, according to the British weather service Met Office. Heavy rain and some snow were also expected during the day. The storm was expected to last into the evening hours.

Schools closed, public transport stopped
As a precaution, all schools in Northern Ireland had to remain closed on Friday. Public transport was halted, Belfast Airport announced air traffic disruptions and many flights were cancelled. Co-Prime Minister Michelle O’Neill called on people to stay at home in a radio interview.

In Scotland, the most severe disruption was expected in the densely populated ‘Central Belt’ between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Here too, schools remain closed. Significant traffic disruptions are also expected. Edinburgh and Glasgow airports have announced restrictions on air traffic.
