An American foundation against extremism bought the former Villa of Auschwitz commander Rudolf Höß. The house, which is located right next to the former German extermination camp, is to become a research and education center.
The focus would be on the fight against anti -semitism and extremism, said the Counter Extremism Project (CEP). The foundation is supported by UNESCO, the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The seemingly idyllic private and family life of the war criminal Rudolf Höß has recently been discussed in the Oscarnomined Holocaust drama “The Zone of Interest”. Höß moved in 1940 to the Villa and his wife Hedwig described the house as “Paradise”. The extermination camp started directly behind the garden wall, the barracks of which can also be seen from the rooms.
The villa is not on the site of today’s present and has been in private property so far. On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, it is now being made public for the first time.
Höß has delivered and sentenced to death
About 1.1 million people died here between 1940 and 1945, most of them were Jews. They were shot, killed in gas chambers or died of hunger and diseases.
Höß led the camp from 1940 to 1944. After the end of the war, he dived, but was traced near Flensburg near Flensburg, delivered to Poland and sentenced to death.
