Fractures must be cured with vibrations

Date:

Vibration helps bones to grow. In a new study, a Swiss research team has now demonstrated how such mechanical stimuli influence the genes in the bones. This should heal broken bones faster.

Their study results can form the basis for therapy pavements against broken bones and bone loss, said the Federal Technical University (ETH) Zurich on Monday. Until then it will probably take some time. “Only if we understand these mechanisms can we develop new therapies based on that,” said the first author Ralph Müller.

For their studies, the researchers created an atlas of genetic activity in healing mouse bones. To do this, they broke four mice a thigh. They then supported the healing with vibration therapy. For each point in the bone they determined which genes were active during the healing and which not.

In this way they could prove that certain genes were specifically active in the areas of the bone that were mechanically emphasized. Conversely, genes that brake bone formation were not active in these places.

In the future, the findings will be used to offer vibration therapy and specifically use medicines that activate or brake the desired genes.
