More than seven people died in a massive panic during the Hindu festival Maha Kumbh Mela in India. At least ten other people were injured, an official representative said Wednesday.
The massive panic took place around 1 o’clock in the morning. The cause was initially unclear. Eyewitnesses reported that believers who wanted to flee stood in one exit to another in one exit.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for “immediate auxiliary measures”. Millions of believers had gathered to take a holy bathroom on the most important day of the six -week festival in the north -indian city of Prayagraj about the confluence of the three holy Rivers Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical, invisible Saraswati.
Holy Bad after canceled drama
Drone -Schoten showed a huge crowd on the shoulder on the river bank for the massive panic shoulder. Videos and photos after the incident showed that were transported to Bahn, while people were crying on the ground and climb others over the left. The authorities had expected a record number of 100 million people to gather on the Holy Bad on Wednesday in the provisional tent city. This was canceled after the incident.
Already in 2013 the holy day of the last Maha Kumbh Mela had taken a similar mass panic, with at least 36 pilgrims died. Kumbh Mela would be the largest religious festival in the world – 400 million pilgrims were expected throughout the period.
