A Naples tobacconist has been sentenced to five years in prison for stealing a €500,000 scratch card from a pensioner. He also has to pay a fine of 3200 euros. According to Italian media, the alleged thief was arrested at an airport.
The theft happened last year. After a retiree realized she won half a million euros with her scratch card, she went to a tobacconist in Naples. One of the holders confirmed the validity and handed the ticket over to a colleague. He suddenly fled on a scooter with fate in his pocket.
Arrested at the airport
A European Arrest Warrant was then issued. The tobacconist was arrested at Rome’s Fiumicino airport in September while trying to travel to Fuerteventura. His sentence – five years in prison and a fine of 3200 euros – has now been announced.
According to the prosecutor, the man has so far shown no remorse and even threatened a cousin of the pensioner. He wants to appeal his verdict.
