At the Mölltal glacier – helicopter rescue of Slovak mountaineers

Date:

From the middle station of the Mölltaler Gletscherbahnen in Carinthia, a 41-year-old and a 23-year-old, both from Slovakia, started the climb to the Herzog Ernst Spitze at 2933 meters on Tuesday afternoon. But exhaustion was not long in coming.

The Slovak climbers also managed to reach the top, but then darkness fell and the two were already exhausted. “At 5.45 p.m., the mountaineers made the emergency call,” the police said. “13 members of the Fragant Mountain Rescue Service and the Spittal Alpine Police were on duty.”

Because a climb would take too long and it was impossible for the police helicopter to land near the alpinists, the emergency helicopter RK1 of the ARA air rescue service was alerted at 7 p.m.

Timely recovery of the alpinists
“The two mountaineers were not ill-equipped, but it would have been almost impossible to survive a night at this altitude with these low temperatures,” explains ARA rescuer Patrick Weilguni. “Fortunately, the nighttime wind rescue worked without a hitch.” The two severely hypothermic climbers were then flown to the LKH Villach, where they received further medical care.
