The German public prosecutor announced Wednesday’s arrest 22 suspected of membership in a German terrorist organization planning a couplike three other far-right sympathizers of that organization. 23 of the arrests were made in Germany, one in Austria and one in Italy.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, the suspects belong to a terrorist organization founded at the latest at the end of November last year “which has set itself the goal of ending the established state order in Germany and replacing it with its own form”. of state, the outlines of which have already been worked out”.

“The members of the organization are aware that this plan can only be carried out through the use of military means and violence against representatives of the state”, including deaths, which they accept as an “intermediate step” to “change the system at all levels,” the statement added.

The defendants are united by “a thorough rejection of the state institutions and the liberal democratic order” of the Federal Republic of Germany, which over time led them to take the decision “to participate in their violent elimination”, and to start with concrete preparations for this.

conspiracy myths

The members of the group follow a conglomeration of conspiracy myths made up of stories from the so-called Reichsburger ideology (Citizens of the Reich), an ultra-right movement that does not recognize the sovereignty of present-day Germany, and QAnon, a far-right conspiracy theory that emerged in the United States. The group’s central body is a “council” and also has a “military arm” responsible for the planned takeover of power by force of arms.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, some members of the organization have served in the German army in the past. The 22 alleged members of the organization arrested, two of whom acted as leaders, are German citizens, as are two of the three sympathizers arrested, while the third is a Russian citizen.

The arrests have taken place in the states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Hesse, Lower Saxony, Saxony and Thuringia, as well as a case in Kitzbühel (Austria) and another in Perugia (Italy).

The raids, involving more than 3,000 officers, are still ongoing and are also taking place in the states of Brandenburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. The operation is also directed against 27 other defendants.
