The upper Austrian alpinist Willi Bauer is dead. The 82-year-old fell peacefully asleep on Thursday after a long illness, it said. Bauer was mainly known as one of the two survivors of the Bergen Tragedy from 1986 on the K2 in Pakistan.

The Willi Bauer, born in the Traunviertel in 1942, who initially worked as a smoking sweeper in the bread occupation, later as an energy technician at Lenzing AG, sometimes had counted countless tops in South -America and Asia for the first time in the early 1970s. . Among other things, he was part of the Austrian mountaineering team, who was able to conquer the Yukshin Gardan Sar in the Karakorum in Pakistan for the first time in 1984.

Five dead
The tragedy of August 1986 formed for Farmer on the K2: after his seven -member international team had climbed the top, a snowstorm that lasted a few days broke over the area. In addition to Bauer and his Salzburg Camerades Kurt Diemberger, all mountain climbers involved in the expedition died.

Only about a decade later the father of three had to experience a new tragedy: his son Willi Junior had an accident in the Mont Blanc area in 1997.
