NATO leaders concluded their second and final summit day in Madrid on Thursday, addressing the threats posed by the Alliance’s southern flank and, more specifically, the terrorist threat, after agreeing a new strategy for the next decade which Russia as the biggest problem for its security.

Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenbergexpressed his satisfaction with the decisions taken at the summit, which he believes “transformative” for the future of the Alliance, pointing out that while not a “monolithic” bloc, it has demonstrated its ability to unite in a “dangerous world”.

Stoltenberg appeared before the media at the end of the second and final meeting day to take stock of a summit that he says has been “perfect”. Thus, he applauded the “impeccable” Spanish organization and expressed his thanks to the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, on behalf of all the allied countries.

The forum concluded with the adoption of a new Strategic Concept, the commitment of increased military and financial involvement of the allied countries and the invitation to Sweden and Finland participate in NATO in the coming months, among other milestones.

Stoltenberg has emphasized that there are “unity and resolution” by the Alliance in the face of current challenges, a common front that had already been identified as one of the major goals of the summit following the tensions of recent weeks over Turkey’s veto over the accession of Sweden and Finland.

“NATO has never been a monolithic organization,” Stoltenberg said, stressing that these very differences between “democratic nations” are an “expression of strength” of the Atlantic Alliance.

Former Norwegian Prime Minister Appreciates the military deterrence as one of the most important axes of NATO and has emphasized that the goal remains “preventing war”, a clear allusion to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s fears about possible expansions in Eastern Europe.

In this sense, he has said that it is Putin who must put an “immediate” end to the military offensive in Ukraine, “a sovereign and democratic nation”.

To the same extent, he has warned that: the allied countries will be prepared “for any eventuality” in the future, after Putin has threatened to take action if Sweden and Finland continue their accession process. The two Nordic countries have been formally invited to join the Alliance at the Madrid summit.
