A few days after the big fire in the manufacturer of Salzburg Fittingen Maco, the city now gives an “easy all-clean”, as stated in a broadcast: “The first findings suggest little environmental damage due to leaked salt and nitric acid.”
For twelve hours 125 emergency services of the Salzburg City Fire Brigade against the flames on the night of last Friday, which shot from a production hall of the Maco Company. Six people, including three firefighters, were injured. As reported, more than 60,000 liters of acid occurred in the course of the fire, which are also mixed with extinguishing water.
Now, according to the first findings, the city explains in a broadcast: “Most ended up in the thick basement.” According to Maximilian Schnab of the City Operating Facility Authority, “The performance of the basement like a dense bath with 30 centimeters thick walls”. The basement as a bath is also designed for such an incident, SCHNAB said. In addition, the rapid suction of the adjusted acid minimized the environmental damage by a special company.
Only reports can provide certainty
But: whether the groundwater or the surrounding soil is contaminated has not yet been established. According to the city, the Maco company must hire the geotechnical diagnosis with earth samples of an external civil technology office. “Certainty about the extent of the damage of a possible contamination of the surrounding floor surfaces and the groundwater can only be provided by the geotechnical report,” says it.
The city was able to exclude one thing: “Until now, nothing had come in the Salzach,” says there. The indoor construction was also not as hit as in the beginning. In any case, there is no more risk successful.
The police could clarify the cause of the fire: they were “technical causes in the field of an electrolytic cleaning pool”, which caused the fire. So far there is no information about the amount of material damage.
