Without a change in the law, the family administration for 77,000 refugees from Ukraine in March 2025. Ukrainehilfe Styria is now turning to expand the claim with an open letter to the parliamentary parties.
Explosions in Chernobyl, cold winter, knives between the White House and Kremlin: After almost three years, the war in Ukraine is not in sight. About 77,000 Ukrainians currently live in Austria – many of them are children and young people. According to “Styria Help” there are around 6,000 Ukrainians in basic care, 2500 works in Styria. “Refugees are still coming to us, especially in the winter,” says Marion Bock of “Styria helps”. “People have no heating, and the winter is much more difficult than ours.”
From March, however, a maximum of 30,000 receivers throughout Austria can fall around the family supplement, which they are entitled to the displaced status, – with maximum rates of up to 200 euros, a huge damper, especially for families with different children.
Law must be new
“A woman turned to us because she received a letter from the tax office,” says Bock. “We were shocked.” The investigation then showed: In the legal text, the displaced persons granted a family supply – namely a short story of the Family Burden Compensation Law from 2022 – it says. This has already been changed, but has not been amended in this law.
That is why “Styria helps” and other clubs and the honorary bow for Ukraine now turn to the club guards of the parliamentary parties with an open letter. “For these families – usually mothers with their children – this means the loss of an important contribution to lighting in relation to the costs of food, clothing, accommodation, training and education of the children.”
“It is being worked on”
In the family minister of Susanne Raab (ÖVP), who is also responsible for integration, it is confirmed that the family help will be paid until March 2025. “For an extension of the claim of the family supplement from April 2025, a change in the law in parliament is required, where work is currently being done.”
