Mega Project in Lower Austria – Soon stored a billion liters of water for Vienna

Date:

Large, such as a football field, filled with 140 meters high and filled with water – this is how you can imagine the world’s largest drinking water tank, which is currently being expanded in St. Egyden/district of Nununkirchen (Lower Austria). This is to ensure the continuously increasing water needs in Vienna.

The daily water needs in Vienna are constantly increasing. To guarantee the offer in the future, I am currently being diligently dug in the small village of St. Egyden near Neunkirchen. Because the world’s largest closed drinking water memory is created here. 600,000 liters of water is already stored in four underground rooms. Water that is transported to the federal capital through the 1st high source line.

Why is so big expanded?
“The daily water needs will increase to around 460,000 cubic meters per day by 2050. At the same time, climate change is increasingly leading to extreme weather conditions. This can influence the availability of spring water, “explains Astrid Rompolt, senior press spokeswoman for Wiener Wasser.

The expansion takes place in two phases. By the end of 2028 the memory will be expanded by two rooms (costs: 98 million euros), from 2029 with another two. In general, after completion there will be a storage space for a billion liters of water.

Region -benefits of the mega project
And also benefits the population in Lower Austria. “Viennese water is very interested in taking staff with local knowledge and social connections,” said Rompolt. And: “The people who work in the course of construction bring value creation to the region because they consume on the site and sometimes live there.”
