Tyrol leads the earthquake statistics almost every year. Last year it was about 50 times in the Wamring area alone. The series will continue this year. The reason: Tyrol is on a tectonic error zone.
Again, the walls wiggled in Tyrol on Wednesday evening! The earthquakes, which were observed in the Imst and partly also in the Lech Valley, reached a thickness of 2.3. This year it was already the fifth noticeable earthquake in the country. “The strongest with a size of 3.1 was registered on 13 February south of Wörgl,” says seismologist Rita Meurers from Geosphere Austria. With this power, damage, such as small façade tears, is possible. “In this case, however, the stove depth was eleven kilometers,” explains the expert in the field of earthquakes.
Half of 140 earthquake in Tyrol
But why does the earth always vibrate, especially in Tyrol? “The state is located along a tectonic interference zone,” says Meurers. With these weaknesses in the rock it is easier to breathe. When plates shift, the rock of friction can no longer be resistant and there is a break – we can feel that as an earthquake. About half of the approximately 140 earthquakes observed by the population in Austria last year took place in Tyrol. “For the high number in 2024, an earthquake series in the Wadring area was mainly responsible, here there were 50 felt earthquakes,” Meurers explains.
The vibrations in Tyrol have nothing to do with the ash golf on Santorinin. “That’s too far away.”
