“To protect lives” – Luhansk: Ukrainian army announced withdrawal

Date:

On Sunday afternoon, the Ukrainian government denied Russian reports that the entire Luhansk region had been “liberated”. But hours later, the Ukrainian army announced its withdrawal from the last city of Lysychansk still under fighting. A further defense of the city would have had fatal consequences, the military leadership announced in the evening.

The decision was justified by saving countless soldiers’ lives. At least six people have been killed in a Russian attack on Sloviansk in the east of the country, authorities say. In addition, 15 people were injured, a spokeswoman for the Donetsk regional administration said on Sunday. Mayor Wadym Liach spoke of “many dead and injured”. The city in the Donbass subregion of Donetsk was shelled by multiple rocket launchers on Sunday, the mayor said in a Facebook video.

“Heaviest Attacks in a Long Time”
They were the most violent attacks “in a long time”. There are 15 fires. According to Ukrainian media reports, a market was on fire, among other things. The spokeswoman for the regional administration renewed the call to the inhabitants of Sloviansk to leave the city if possible.

Sloviansk is only a few kilometers from the frontline and has been under rocket fire for days. The Ukrainian side complained that the Russian armed forces also used internationally banned cluster munitions.
