“So far we have confirmed the deaths of eighteen and two injured,” Guerrero prosecutor Sandra Luz Valdovinos told Milenio on television. Among the dead, according to police reports quoted by local media, is Mayor Mendoza’s father, who years ago also ran the corporation of this community, police chiefs and soldiers.
“An operation has been launched to locate and arrest those responsible for the armed attack,” the peacebuilding coordination, which includes the state and federal authorities, said in a statement. Guerrero governor Evelyn Salgado, of the ruling Morena party, condemned the attack on the same social network and assured that she has ordered the investigation to be speeded up to clarify the facts. “There will be no impunity for the cunning aggression against the municipal president,” he wrote.
According to a count by the consultancy Etellekt, 94 mayors have been murdered in Mexico since 2000, including Mendoza.
