250 emergency services – forest fire in Semriach: New Year’s Eve rocket as cause

Date:

A piece of forest was on fire last night near Semriach, north of Graz. About 250 emergency services worked for hours to get the fire under control. That worked on Friday morning. A New Year’s Eve rocket is probably the cause of the fire.

The first alarm was received by the Semriach fire brigade at 8.56 pm on Thursday. A driver driving on Semriacherstrasse called the emergency number. “An area of about two and a half to three hectares is affected. “A total of almost 250 emergency services are on site,” Herbert Buchgraber of the Graz region fire brigade reported on Friday morning.

The fire spread quickly because the forest is currently “extremely dry,” Buchgraber said. A special unit was also on site because the fire was burning in very difficult terrain. The federal army also provided helicopter support.

Roadblock on both sides
Gernot Mandl from the Semriach volunteer fire brigade was also on site and was able to give the signal in the morning: “We now have the fire under control. Helicopters are currently on their way to further investigate the situation.” For safety reasons, the L318 was closed in both directions.

Governor on site
Neo-provincial governor Mario Kunasek rushed to Semriach that morning to express his gratitude to the emergency services. Because the fire was said to have been caused by a New Year’s Eve rocket ignited too early, Kunasek also appealed to the population: “In such weather conditions you can only ask them not to shoot or at least to limit the firearms.” until New Year’s Eve.”
