The population of Austria appreciates forests as recreational rooms. This is demonstrated by a survey by Foresight for the Austrian Federal Forest (ÖBF). Accordingly, six out of ten respondents stay in the forest several times a month.
“Nine out of ten feel better after a stay,” said spokesperson for the ÖBF board Georg Schöppl on Monday. According to the survey, the most popular activities include walking or walking (82 percent), wants to repair every second person. Only about every sixth person runs or trains in the forest. 13 percent are on the road with mountain bikes or bicycles. Some go on a ski tour or walk with snowshoes, a small part.
Many respondents feel that more and more people are traveling in the forest. About two -thirds has the impression that others are adhering to rules. This means, for example, regulations to be on the road with dogs and bicycles or mountain biking. More than 80 percent considers “binding rules of the game” necessary.
“Conversion to species -rich mixed forests”
The respondents stated that they would use the forest to refuel and switch off, for movement outdoors, but also as a cool environment on heat days. Some see the climate crisis as a challenge for the forests of Austria. “We continue to work on the conversion of the forests towards species -rich mixed forests that can deal with climatic conditions and help us to deal with the climate crisis,” said Andreas Gruber, Öbf Board Forestry and Nature Conservation.
The federal foresters provide 15 percent of the forest area of Austria, with 850,000 hectares they are the largest manager for nature in the country.
1015 people in Austria aged 16 and older participated in the Forest Survey.
