“Never Thought of It” – Pope Francis Laughs at Rumors of Resignation

Date:

Pope Francis rejects speculation about imminent resignation. “It never occurred to me,” laughed the 85-year-old leader of the Roman Catholic Church on Monday when asked if a series of events in late August could be the prelude to the imminent announcement of his resignation.

This includes meetings with the cardinals of the world to discuss a new Vatican Constitution, the appointment of new cardinals, and a visit to the Italian city of L’Aquila. This is associated with Pope Celestine V, who abdicated from the papal office in 1294. Also Pope Benedict XVI. visited the city for four years before retiring in 2013.

All just “coincidences”
“All these coincidences made some think that the same ‘liturgy’ would take place,” Francis said with a laugh. “But that never crossed my mind. Indeed.” Francis nevertheless reiterated his often outspoken position that he might one day resign instead of serving for life if his health made it impossible for him to lead the church. When asked when that might be, he said: “We know it doesn’t. God will tell.”

Cancer is just a rumor
In the exclusive interview with Reuters at his residence in the Vatican, Pope Francis also denied rumors that he had cancer. He joked that his doctors “didn’t tell me about it”. The pope laughed to describe the speculation as Vatican “court gossip”. Rumors of cancer had surfaced after he had surgery to remove part of his colon, which was suffering from diverticulitis – a condition common in the elderly. “The operation was a great success,” the Pope said.

“Get well soon”
At the same time, Francis gave details about his knee disease, which is bothering him. Francis, who entered the room alone and unaided with a cane, said his knee problem was caused by a “minor fracture.” He contracted it when he tripped when a ligament in his right knee became inflamed. “I’m fine, I’m getting better,” he said, adding that the calcification of the fracture was ongoing. His treatment includes laser and magnetic therapy. The pope added that he opposed surgery on his knee because he didn’t want the negative side effects of general anesthesia to repeat after his six-hour bowel surgery last year.
