In 2024, 1.6 million people lived alone in Austria. That is 17.8 percent of the total population and around 430,000 people more than 20 years earlier. “The trend to households of one person is unbroken,” emphasized Statistics Austria, general manager Tobias Thomas.
For comparison: 20 years ago this share was still 14.6 percent. The share of those who live in a partnership, “on the other hand, in almost half of the population has remained almost stable in the same period, whereby the marriage has lost any interest in comparison with the community,” said Thomas.
The most common group of people who live alone are women aged 65 and older
The largest group of people who lived only in 2024 was more than 65 years (605,000 and 34.3 percent of this age group), of which more than two -thirds were women (425,000). With 318,000 people, 55 to 64-year-olds represented the second largest group among those who live alone (23.4 percent of this age group). Only 2.6 percent (or 57,000 people) only lived in one household under 25, for the 35 to 44-year-olds it was 14.8 percent and 16.0 percent for the 45 to 54 year olds.
Almost half live in a partnership
In 2024, 4.4 million people lived together with a partner in the household, which corresponded to a share of 49 percent. According to the Austria statistics, the share of the population that lives in partnership has remained quite constant in the last 20 years, but the proportion of people with and without a marriage certificate shifted: in 2004 41.8 percent still lived with the spouse, this share fell slightly to 39.1 percent 20 years later. In exchange, the share of the communities increased steadily without a marriage certificate (from 7.3 percent to 9.9 percent).
In 2024, more than 70 percent of the population lived in private households in a partnership in 2024, and this share fell to around 50 percent in earlier and later years of life. Although a partnership without a marriage certificate is more common at a young age, “this relationship runs in higher years of life,” said Austria statistics.
The calculations of Statistics Austria are based on the research of the Microcensus employees.
