In Waidhofen one of the YBBS, record heat is now measured near the ground! If the thermometer shows the summer heat for days, it becomes crucial – especially in cities. The hot temperatures mainly increase the seniors – the Red Cross gives tips.
“I have been living in the city center for 77 years now, but the large, unbearable nocturnal heat only came when the city was literally at 13,000 square meters in 2000 paved-out that only stones were promoted by the state governance at the time,” complains the heat-plane senior conductor Karl Piaty. The second sad chapter on this issue is that the rock did not go without renovation for long and that the center of Waidhofen has become the “paving construction site” almost every summer.
Sweaty expedition
To leave the city as a heat pile of the Mostviertel, the brave piaty now started with its own measuring device. The goal of his sweaty expedition: the Freisingerberg, where the thermometer actually and demonstrably showed a record break 57.2 (!) Gad Celsius. Piaty: “It is often more than 60 degrees hot above.”
However, on the side of the city it is claimed that the cooling islands are placed very specifically and are placed on the cool shadow force of the trees. In any case, the greening is consistently driven.
Above the 30-degree brand, life in inner-city asphalt deserts often becomes pain. The heat is a burden for 45 percent of the lower Austrians. Most people (53 percent) suffer from tropical temperatures in the Viennese environment, but few (31 percent) in the Waldviertel. In the St. Pölten metropolitan area, in the wine and the Mostviertel, the share of the Hittelgege residents is 48 percent.
Traffic areas turn into real Sintels into a high summer sun (see article at the bottom right). “Waiting zones for pedestrian lights are particularly hotspots in the true sense of the word,” says Sebastian Raho of the traffic club. The expert’s request: “In the hot season, shorter red phases must be programmed for lower waiting times for traffic lights.”
The oven effect can also be cooled. The magical word: more green! “Shadows can lower the surface temperature by a maximum of 25 degrees,” says Raho. There are even flagship projects in the wide country. Raho, for example, mentions the new main square in Amstetten, where 70 trees were planted. Or also the redesign of the promenade in St. Pölten, where the shadow of the street area became ten times from 5 to 50 percent.
Sufficient liquid, light food, blackout rooms, storage of medication good, envelopes or a cool shower: especially when the mercury climbs up, simple tips against the Hittecrotcher are useful. “Older people in particular run the risk and we want to clarify more here,” says Hans Ebner, President Rotes Kreuz in Lower Austria. In the previous year, the employees of the Red Cross of the Voluntary Social Year were broadcast for the first time as Heat Friends to inform seniors about the dangers and giving valuable tips. So plump sun must be avoided and a headgear must be worn.
