Waste water analysis – Kufstein remains cocaine -stronghold in Austria

Date:

The current waste water analysis of forensic medicine is available. It shows that more cola is consumed in the west of Austria than in the east. A capital of Tyroolean stands out.

The results of the sewerage -based drug surveillance show the same trends, performed by Innsbruck Forensic Medicine (GMI) on behalf of the European Union drug agency.

Waste water from 190 communities
In 2024, the waste water from a total of 135 cities and regions were investigated in 2024 – including 17 sewage treatment plants in Austria (in total around 190 municipalities) and a South Tyrolean sewage treatment plant, Herbert Oberacher, head of the GMI sewer laboratory. The results in detail:

“On average, a resident of one of the 17 regions investigated in Austria smokes a little more than a glass of wine, smokes three to four cigarettes and consumes 0.07 joints and about 1.5 milligrams of stimulating drugs,” illustrates Oberacher.

Cannabis is the dominant drug
The consumption per head of the population of alcohol and nicotine is relatively uniform in Austria. The forbidden drugs have a less homogeneous picture: Cannabis was the dominant medicine in all regions.

The average daily consumption of THC (cannabis) was eleven grams per 1000 inhabitants. Vienna registered the highest THC consumption.

1.4 grams of cocaine per 1000 inhabitants
Among the stimulating agents, cocaine is the highest sale of sale, here the average daily consumption was 1.4 grams per 1000 inhabitants. In West -Estenrijk and South -Tirol, cocaine per capita is used in larger quantities than in East Eastrijk. Kufstein registered the highest consumption of cocaine per head of the population.

Comparison with boats: Innsbruck at the front
A comparison of South and North Tirol can be made on the basis of the data of the capitals of the State: in Bolzano, consumption per head of the population of all substances surveyed was lower than in Innsbruck.

“With the help of the waste water analysis, consumer patterns can also be seen: in many regions, higher alcohol, cocaine and MDMA sales were found on weekdays in many regions in many regions (remark: EXSTACY), which speaks for their use as party drugs,” says Chemiker Oberacher.

Conclusions for the consumption of 3.5 million people
“Austria supplies 13 percent of all European data sets in EU-wide drug surveillance,” reports Herbert Oberacher. His studies mean that conclusions around 3.5 million people in Austria and South Tirol are drawn.

For the annual score study, rehearsals were taken from the tributary of the sewage treatment plants in the spring and early summer 2024 for a period of a week and evaluated by the experts of the Forensic Institute using the latest analytical chemical procedures.
