Budget Renovation – Bishops: “Strong shoulders” have to pay more

Date:

The conference of the Catholic bishops is in favor of expecting the “strong shoulders also heavy loads”. It appeals to the government to demand higher amounts from those who can afford it when renovating the budget.

The government must think about new taxes or tax reforms. Because when the state radically shortens its performance, the financially weaker suffering, as the church emphasizes. At the same time, Austria must also remain an “efficient business location with safe jobs”, says the chairman of the Bishops’ conference, Franz Lackner.

Lackner: “Let’s stay generous”
People who are in need because of their debt must be able to trust the general public and support families and single parents. The church does not doubt the need for budget consolidation. Austria is still a rich country, says Lackner. “Let us stay generous with humanitarian aid abroad, in development cooperation and for refugees.”

“Not the first defender” of the ban on headscarf
Lackner is not so clear about the ban on headscarves. As a church representative, he is “not the first defender” of such a ban. At the same time, however, one can see from conversations with Muslims that wearing a headscarf is often not religious, but culturally justified and is used as a symbol of delimitation.

Peace in Ukraine is not a “deal”
About the war in Ukraine, Lackner believes that all serious efforts are welcome for an end of violence, for a silence of weapons and for negotiations on peace alone. But that is “something other than a” deal “in which the stronger distribution over the heads of those affected, the land, mineral resources, influence and power distribute.

According to Lackner, a fair and permanent peace must take into account the interests of people in Ukraine and their right to self -determination – this is also in the interest of Russia.

Schönborn’s tasks distributed
The conference of the bishops met for the first time since 1991 without the emeritus archbishop of Cardinal Christoph Schönborn. On the occasion of the departure of Schönborn, his responsibilities at the bishops’ conference were re -distributed. The styric diocesan bishop Wilhelm Krautwaschl takes over the media, the Innsbruck Diocesan Bishop Hermann Glettler together with Abbot Vinzenz Wohlwend.
