The TV journalist who was shot dead during a fierce firefight between Israeli security forces and militant Palestinians during a raid in May may have been fatally injured by an Israeli bullet. This was revealed by a forensic examination of the projectile by US experts.
Reporter Shireen Abu Akleh, who is well known in the Arab world, was not intentionally hit, it said. The 51-year-old may have been hit by bullets from the Palestinians, the Israeli side initially said, but it was not possible to determine which side was responsible for the fatal shots. The Arab news channel AlreadyJazeera, for whom Akleh had worked, accused Israel of targeted, cold-blooded murder. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also spoke of an “execution crime”.
Al-Jazeera wrote that the reporter made the raid wearing a vest clearly marked “press”. The Palestinian from East Jerusalem has been working for the Qatari broadcaster for more than 20 years. She was best known in the Arab world for her coverage of the conflict in the Middle East. Al-Jazeera condemned the deadly shooting as “a heinous crime aimed at preventing media coverage”.
Palestinians: ‘Truth about the dead veiled’
The Palestinian government was also dissatisfied with the results of the forensic analysis. This was only intended to “disguise the truth about the journalist’s murder”. Akleh’s family also rejected the findings.
