“Hai Taxi”: Octopus drives through the sea at Makohai

Date:

Spectacular discovery off the coast of New Zealand: researchers were surprised when they suddenly discover an orange spot on a shark in the middle of the sea. A buoy? A tumor? No! It is a brutal octopus that drives on the predatory fish!

The incredible spectacle took place in December 2023, when marine biologists from the University of Auckland were actually looking for food for eating in the ocean. But then they caught the attention of the bizarre team (see video below): a Maori Oktopus squatted on the head of a short Vin Maco as if he were enjoying a taxi ride.

Driven through the sea on haikopf
Zeebiologist Rochelle Constantine could hardly trust her eyes: “At first I thought it was a buoy,” she says in an interview with the “New York Times”. But a drone finally brought certainty – the main foot on the flash – fast shark with its tentacles.

Curious encounter throws puzzles
As NTV reports, Maori Oktopuses live on the seabed, while Makohai Robbers rarely travel there. So the curious encounter raises puzzles. Did the Octopus not have in stock? Maybe he became a hunter himself – or was he just looking for a sensation?

How long the animal duo was traveling remains a secret. The researchers went on after ten minutes. But one thing is certain: it was a wild journey for the Octopus because his “shark taxi” can swim quickly up to 50 km/h.

This incredible incident shows again: The ocean is full of surprises!
