At the beginning of June, two children with Austrian nationality were brought to Austria from a Syrian camp. After arrival, they were directly reunited with their relatives, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. No further information was given about the condition of the children or their parents. There are currently less than ten Austrian children in Syrian camps.
The two Austrian children have been safely returned to their families. It remains to be seen whether these could be the two children of Maria G. from Salzburg, who traveled to Syria in 2014. The ministry has not provided the APA with precise information on this.
Maria G. converted to Islam at the age of 17 and joined the Islamic State (IS) six months later. Her parents tried in vain to get her back.
Completed four minors in total
In 2019, two children were brought to Austria from a Syrian camp. These were the children of the supposedly deceased Viennese IS supporter Sabina S. Custody was then handed over to the grandparents.
Since the outbreak of war in 2011, four minors have been returned to Austria from Syrian camps. It is currently known that there are fewer than ten Austrian civilians in the Al-Roj and Al-Hol camps in northeastern Syria.
