The 20 cats that are older than twelve years of age are currently living in the Mentlberg Animal Shelter in Innsbruck. For the older velvet legs there is also a separate, extremely comfortable “senior station”.
Twelve elderly house tigers alone have only been added this year. These are an unusually large number of new additions. The most important season for cat loads comes in the summer, so it is always tight. At the moment there is still the calm for the storm.
A sudden death, too high costs or too much effort – there are many reasons why cats should leave their familiar home. There are a lot of house -terty -air resord in the senior station of the Innsbruck Animal Shelter Mentlberg of the Tyrol Animal Welfare Association. Sabine van de Katten department started the apartment of the seniors for the cats from the age of twelve in December 2023. The heart project of the cat expert offers older Kitty a cozy and especially quiet house. Almost twelve spinning seniors currently live there.
There is even a sunburn for the cat
There is a bank, hiding places and toys in the rooms. The apartment also includes a sunny terrace. The animal carers lovingly offer the cats, give them the medication needed in old age and treat the ailments. Magdalena Schwaiger, the director of the Animal Welfare Association for Tyrol, says: “Unfortunately I don’t know why so many older cats are coming to us now. Such an accumulation takes place from time to time. Every cat has a different fate.”
For example, “Kater” is about 17 years old and lived for years like a stray cat in Zirl. Cat lovers have regularly fed him, but suddenly his health deteriorated. So he was taken to the Mentlberg Animal Shelter.
There “Kater” moved to the almost simultaneous senior station. Here the charismatic animal receives medication, food and cuddly units – everything that the former stray heart heart desires. As De Zookeeper reports, the Methusalem of the house secretly ordered the command in the station of the seniors. Like a true Lord, he does not let his role feel the roommates.
Top boss “male” remains forever
The retired cats are particularly difficult to find a home for the last phase of life – many stay in the shelter forever. “Unfortunately we have many seniors who die with us,” says Magdalena Schwaiger. In the case of a death, the cat is cremated for free by the ‘Aurora’ company. There is even a place for the urns in the station of the seniors.
The one or the other “retired” in Mentlberg would of course still be useful – Baas “Hangover”, of course. According to Schwaiger, many reasons speak for the approval of an experienced cuddly tiger: “You can give the cat a nice pension. The older cats are incredibly grateful. Of character, calm, need for hug and correctly cuddly.
Old cats are not easy to convey
According to the expert, it doesn’t seem too often that someone is looking for an older cat. “Ten to 15 -year -old cats will be taught more, but then it will be more difficult.” The joy in the hiding place is all the greater when a problem child gets a second chance in one for home.
But for whom is an older cat that is suitable? Magdalena Schwaiger explains: “People who are at home and where it is quiet.
Important to mention: the adopters must be clear about regular costs for veterinary visits, medication and special feed. You also have to trust yourself to give the medication to the animal – usually several times a day.
So you become the godfather of the senior cats
If you don’t take a cat, but still want to support Kitty, it is advisable for you to sponsor a seniors. The sponsors can – each after making an appointment – visit “their” cats and spend time with them. You are there of 15 euros per month.
The sponsors feel great gratitude on the part of the cats during their visits. Even those tigers of the house who are usually very retired in their own area of the senior station, go on their own. No wonder: the sponsors like to bring treats in the hiding place for their protégés.
The cats know that and don’t forget. They just don’t want to miss these facilities. “Would also be a shame,” grumbles “Kater”.
